• 9 Creative Ways to Stay Active Throughout the Day

Staying active throughout the day isn’t easy for most of us because we tend to lead sedentary lifestyles these days. We sit behind a desk all day and then we come home and watch TV. For many of us, even considering being more active seems impossible. Before we get to some creative ways to stay active throughout the day, let’s look at why it’s important.

Creative Ways to Stay Active Throughout the DayAccording to The Lancet, “Strong evidence shows that physical inactivity increases the risk of many adverse health conditions, including major non-communicable diseases such as coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and breast and colon cancers, and shortens life expectancy.” Learn more here: Is Too Much Sitting Killing You?

It’s not enough to just workout for 45 minutes a day if we are sitting the rest of the time. An active lifestyle is the key to health. By consistently staying in motion, our bodies keep going and going and going, like the Energizer bunny. When we accomplish that, it’s like a fountain of youth that keeps us younger longer and helps us lead a better quality of life without chronic diseases well into “old age.”

9 Creative Ways to Stay Active Throughout the Day

    1. Get Up A Lot – Instead of just sitting all day at your desk, set a timer and make sure to get up at least once every hour. Do some stretches and walk around for a minute before sitting back down. Maybe even consider doing a few squats or jogging in place for a minute.
    1. Look at Your Household Chores Differently – Instead of dreading cleaning the house or doing things like laundry and yard work, look at it as a way to include more activity into your day. It’s a great way to accomplish two things at once!
    1. Avoid Elevators & Close Parking Spots – Instead of hopping on the elevator, use the stairs, and while you’re at it, look for the parking spot that is farther away not closest. We’ve been so conditioned to reduce our activity, but now it’s time to reverse that thinking. In what simple ways like this can you increase your activity?
    1. Take After Dinner Walks, Dance & Play – Family walks create happy family memories while bringing more activity into your life (and sharing that healthy habit with your family). Think of other ways you can engage the whole family in exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise. How about turning some music on and dancing or playing some sports outside?
    1. Consider a Standing Desk – Standing may not seem like much activity, but it does engage many muscles and it encourages us to move around a lot more than if we were sitting. If a standing desk seems too difficult, start out small by using it for a short period of time and working up to longer periods of time.
    1. Set Up Active Meetings – Instead of meeting someone for coffee, meet in a park and walk while you talk or toss a ball around. It might not work in all situations of course, but remember, when you are doing something physical, it engages your mind to be more creative so they might turn out to be the best meetings you’ve ever had.
    1. Actively Watch TV – If watching TV at night is something you find yourself doing a lot, use that time to do some exercises. You can watch television and do some yoga poses or jog on a treadmill at the same time.
    1. Prolong Your Trips – Instead of trying to load your arms up with groceries or things you are carrying in from the car, take smaller amounts so that you have to walk in and out of the house more times.
    1. Pace While on the Phone – Either pace around the house, go for a walk or walk on a treadmill while you are on the phone. This is another great way to do two things at once.
